The Axis of Misery

March 2, 2008 – 10:59 pm

Misery by Mollyeh11 on Flickr
There are certain companies that, when I know I have to deal with them, a big wave of dread washes over me. In fact, there are INDUSTRIES that bring on this feeling. Industries like airline, car rental, telecom, cable, banks and storage always bring this on for me. Most of them [...]

Social Capital and the Influence of Social Networks

February 23, 2008 – 11:04 pm

Someone once asked me if reputation is interchangeable with Social Capital. Yes and no. To me, reputation is merely a dimension of Social Capital, not truly interchangeable. Social Capital is much more complex and includes:

connections
reputation
influence
bridging capital - the number of connections you have across to different industries, social strata, etc.
bonding capital - the depth of [...]

Happiness as Core to Your Business Model

February 3, 2008 – 10:37 am

Did I say something funny? by Capn Madd Matt on Flickr
Chris and I presented a workshop at Web Directions North this week we had originally titled, “The Enterprise and Government in the 2.0 Era: What’s Next?”
Boring, eh? Well, we thought so. So, we sat down a couple of weeks ago to restructure the information we [...]

Please Stop Crowdsourcing Me

December 21, 2007 – 5:37 pm

No, seriously. Stop it. I’m tired.
I came and I thought, hey, this is kind of neat-o and it empowered me at first. I thought, “Awesome! They want my opinion! They listen!” and I offered it and the feedback was, “Great idea!” and I watched as you implemented it, then benefitted from it and I [...]

Video: Interview with Dell

December 9, 2007 – 2:12 am

I had the chance to interview the fabulously down-to-earth community team at Dell this week. Here is a clip from that meeting. I do have more and will probably be posting other clips at a later date. If you want the whole interview, I can send it to you (ftp or YouSendIt). I will also [...]

My Seriously Serendipitous Life

November 29, 2007 – 5:34 pm

So, we’ve talked alot about Accelerating Serendipity and how many of the things we do or participate in (twitter, dopplr, flickr, coworking, barcamp, etc) is all about creating more opportunities for everyday magic to happen (that stuff you couldn’t have planned in a zillion years, but is exactly what needs to happen to get to [...]

A Company is the Sum of its People

November 27, 2007 – 2:38 pm

Thanks so much to my friend, Jay Fichialos, now on Ma.gnolia and sending me awesome links like this one that say things like:
…the one thing I have been able to extract as the core and essential principle is the fact that people are the singlemost important elements in a company. When you think about it, [...]

You may be a community freeloader if you…

November 24, 2007 – 12:56 am

q: What do you call someone who joins communities, adds friends and generally uses social networking tools to promote their own interests solely?
a: a community freeloader
Now, promoting your interests within a community isn’t a bad thing, per se. Having strong networks of people is a great advantage to furthering your causes, getting advice, meeting the [...]

The Story of Satisfaction

November 8, 2007 – 8:39 pm

Here it is! The totally edited down version of my interview with the fabulous folks at Satisfaction. I have loads more footage (this is 1/20th of the footage), so I’ll probably be putting out smaller snippets. I didn’t think anyone would want to sit through 2 hours of us talking, though.
This particular section discusses the [...]
