The Axis of Misery

March 2, 2008 – 10:59 pm

Misery by Mollyeh11 on Flickr
There are certain companies that, when I know I have to deal with them, a big wave of dread washes over me. In fact, there are INDUSTRIES that bring on this feeling. Industries like airline, car rental, telecom, cable, banks and storage always bring this on for me. Most of them [...]

Social Capital and the Influence of Social Networks

February 23, 2008 – 11:04 pm

Someone once asked me if reputation is interchangeable with Social Capital. Yes and no. To me, reputation is merely a dimension of Social Capital, not truly interchangeable. Social Capital is much more complex and includes:

connections
reputation
influence
bridging capital - the number of connections you have across to different industries, social strata, etc.
bonding capital - the depth of [...]

Yes. Internet Friends can also be Friends IRL

February 21, 2008 – 9:17 pm

This past month and a half has been a little rocky for me. In the future, I’m sure that I will refer to it as a blip on the positive momentum of my life, but today, it still feels a little overwhelming.
But the positive part of all of this is what I have learnt [...]

Car(e)Free Living and TransitCampBayArea

January 22, 2008 – 7:37 pm

While driving up to Sonoma the other day in my lovely Zipcar (this time I picked a Mazda 3 for the iPod jack, but next time, I’m taking the Mini Cooper), I wondered to myself why anyone in close proximity to Zipcars, public transit and other great transportation alternatives would even WANT to own a [...]

The Right Tool for the Right Job

January 19, 2008 – 4:05 pm

[cross-posted from OpenMediaWeb.org]

One of the core messages that came out of the Media Web Meetup III: the Producers was this:
Copyright laws, DMCA, etc. were tools that were instituted to help large organizations protect themselves from large organizations, it did not imagine the negotiations of individual producers in the Open Media Web. Instead of bringing the [...]

The Human Body Teaches Us To Embrace the Chaos

January 12, 2008 – 10:03 pm

I’ve been working out for nearly three months now, all the while watching what I eat a little more carefully and staying committed to a pretty regular and fairly vigorous workout: 25 minutes on the elliptical trainer, 25 minutes on the treadmill (briskly walking for 5 minutes, jogging for 15 minutes, then cooling down for [...]

Please Stop Crowdsourcing Me

December 21, 2007 – 5:37 pm

No, seriously. Stop it. I’m tired.
I came and I thought, hey, this is kind of neat-o and it empowered me at first. I thought, “Awesome! They want my opinion! They listen!” and I offered it and the feedback was, “Great idea!” and I watched as you implemented it, then benefitted from it and I [...]

Dear Head, meet Heart…and vice versa

December 17, 2007 – 9:32 pm

…I think the two of you will really get along!

What I’ve observed over and over is the following disconnected conversations:
H: They aren’t legally obligated.
S: Doesn’t matter, it’s just not right.
H: Of course it matters, they aren’t legally obligated, so why should they?
S: They should because it is the right thing to do.
H: So? They would [...]

Tragedy of the Commons: Lane Hartwell vs. Richter Scales

December 16, 2007 – 3:15 pm

In Ridley’s book, The Origins of Virtue: Human Instincts and the Evolution of Cooperation, he explains that Garrett Hardin’s famous Tragedy of the Commons example which reads:
“Ruin is the destination toward which all men rush, each pursuing his own best interest in a society that believes in the freedom of the commons. Freedom in a [...]

My Seriously Serendipitous Life

November 29, 2007 – 5:34 pm

So, we’ve talked alot about Accelerating Serendipity and how many of the things we do or participate in (twitter, dopplr, flickr, coworking, barcamp, etc) is all about creating more opportunities for everyday magic to happen (that stuff you couldn’t have planned in a zillion years, but is exactly what needs to happen to get to [...]
