I think a lot of people are stuck in the mindsets that you outline here (shortcuts, "personal branding", quantity, messaging, etc). I think people look at the most successful commercial enterprises, institutions, etc, see this going on, and believe that this is what they must emulate. Problem is, there is no room for any more players in that realm, and it takes massive resources to operate in the machine way. Plus, perhaps most importantly, it isolates and alienates people, as you point out. RE: Volume, we at Forward Foundation are working on a model to show that too much volume has the counter-effect of attracting and sustaining interest. More on this later Tara, this was an amazing presentation (and I did not even see you deliver it).
