{start rant} I did not work hard to slowly, but organically build my influence in order to use it to boost people’s ranks in silly contests, to hock bad ideas or to retweet stuff I don’t care about! {/end rant}
I really hate the activity that comes out of an obsession with numbers. Think QUALITY, people, not QUANTITY. It’s a long term play. The other stuff is fleeting and meaningless. Really.

I work quickly to build my influence, being well-ordered in ordinal ranked contests. For the quality of the messages and activities of the writer and her ideas is REALLY meaningful.

Thank you, thank you!
I experienced a similar rant, though slightly more verbose, about the quantity v. quality factor. While it’s something I can apply easily to my life and personal branding, it is an everyday change as an online community manager.
In short, you made my day. It always feels good to not be alone in such thoughts. Be well.

Numbers have their place in the world.

Are you using “influence” as a noun or a verb? Is it an asset, or something you do? Or both? I’m fascinated by the pursuit of popularity when its goal is power (where power=ability to bring about results), as opposed to simple notoriety.
