Some stuff I’m reading this week…

“When you’re by yourself, you’re like an island to your own,” said Suzi Edwards, who also runs her own home-based business, WallFly Marketing. Her co-founder, Jaye Donaldson, is president of the marketing firm The Donaldson Group, which owns the building Group 88 will occupy. “We want the individuals to have a community to go to.”

Great article shot from Seattle Magazine of Susan and Jacob of Office Nomads! Congrats y’all!

As you drive down Biscayne Blvd in Miami, Florida you will run into the Art District with Galleries, Boutiques and amazing wall art and graffiti. Here is where Ali Wadsworth has taken the lead and started the first Miami Coworking Community Workspace – Brikolodge. The coworking space is located at the Wynwood Lofts - 250 NW 23rd St Miami, Fl 33127. Wynwood Lofts is characterized as a pet-friendly, sophisticated, urbane, chic enclave for artists, writers, photographers and entrepreneurs. The purpose of the bill is to invalidate a court victory achieved by CFAC in a suit against Santa Clara County. The Superior Court ruled that the county’s basemap data were public records and therefore had to be made available for the cost of duplication. That ruling is now on appeal.
We must fight this if we want to continue the trend of opening, not closing government data.

New research suggests that it is possible to buy happiness after all: when you spend money on others. In a series of studies, University of British Columbia Professor Elizabeth Dunn found that individuals report significantly greater happiness if they spend money “pro-socially” – that is on gifts for others or charitable donations – rather than spending on themselves.

Tusler took the concept, gathered a group of friends together and began holding weekly meetings on launching the idea. The word went out on Aqus news and other Web sites and local interest peaked. He found a 1,600 sq. ft. space at the Penngrove Station and with the help of a few friends, launched a “coworking” community in downtown Penngrove.

This is so awesome. Can’t wait to go to their grand opening!

Because of OpenID’s freshness, and because of the way social bookmark spam works, it has significantly reduced the amount of spammers using Ma.gnolia for the time being. We knew this would happen, and it certainly influenced our decision making process.
But, how much is significant? Spam bookmark creation has dropped by 68%, and the creation of new spam accounts has dropped by 63%. This difference has tipped the scales so that legitimate bookmark and account creation by real people now outweighs spam created by bots. Hooray!

Tara and I and probably you take these risks or precautions in the social space because we are literate in this space. There has been a lot written about young people and the risks of openness, but the rest of us need education and potentially protection from this exposure. The benefits of ambient intimacy far outweigh the potential risks of exposure in my opinion, but awareness of this exposure is important.

“Facebook users are more connected, happy and engaged that what they get credited for in the mainstream media,” Valenzuela said. “But their relationships are not that strong. They are positive, but not strong.”
Valenzuela concluded with lessons that journalists can take from the study.
“Social networking sites are useful structures for connecting people, sharing information and for collective action, but not for exchaning points of view,” Valenzuela said.

Crossing the chasm is all about getting a technology widely adopted. The most difficult step is to win over the so called early majority of the mass market. This can only happen with the help of early adopters, who are instrumental since they are used as both examples and evangelists.

Over the past few years, social networking on the Web has exploded with many new tools and technologies. While opinions vary about the applicability of these Web 2.0 tools to government, there is one thing we can be sure of: These tools are going to affect the way government business gets done.

Most new business owners experience this sudden sense of panic. I know I did! Typically it is only a problem if you allow it to stop you moving forward. If the fear prevents you picking up the phone to call a prospect then it is getting in your way of succeeding.
Here are five strategies to help you get through this stage of fear:

Thus inspired, Rice University graduate students Matthew Wettergreen and Ned Dodington are developing what they say will be the largest co-working space to date. The Caroline Collective is a planned 6,000-square-foot, two-building office and art studio space in the Museum District.
“I see it a lot as a product of our friendship and working relationship. He’s a bioengineer; I’m an architect,” said Dodington. “We started to collaborate on projects and are consistently wowed by the fact through a collaborative effort you can produce interesting results.”

Southwest Airlines is also heavily involved in the Twitter community, using the service to inform their customers know about deals among other things. Jackie Huba reports getting a tweet from them explaining that if she booked a ticket using PayPal, I’d get $50 back in PayPal credit.
Southwest is also known to tweet press happenings and pointers to blog posts, while also staying tuned into conversations about their brand. David Armano had recently flown Southwest Airlines and found the airport check-in a two-button breeze, something which he mentioned on Twitter. He received a “thank you” from the airline a few hours later. How nice!
