I live in DC, and I love Zipcar, too! My husband and I have been using it for the past three years, and we’ve always been very satisfied.

Hey Tara, I just moved to Washington D.C a few months ago. I had been leaning towards going carless. The DC subway system here is pretty solid and cover 95% of whatever you need. We do have ZipCar and after your post I might actually try it out sometime because I’m sure I’ll want to drive at some point.

Re the Prius “on” button;
Apparently the new Toyota’s in Japan work that way … from what I gather, you just need to have the key in your pocket, and the car recognizes you; push one button to unlock the door, and push another button to start the engine. Now that is making technology useful!

I know people using the service in Toronto, and they are very happy with it, enough to sell their car. It seems very simple and the registration process was easy.

We’ve got Flexcar here in Portland, and it seems to rock (although I haven’t used it myself, yet). I’m so glad to see other people who don’t own a car and still, miraculously, manage to get around! People look at us like we’re crazy when we explain that we don’t own a vehicle.

I have been living car-free since the day of my meeting with you & Chris & Adrian at CA! Just coincidence, I guess. After towing it from Colma BART to San Jose, I decided to see how it’d be like to forego a car.

I think the move to SF (soon, don’t know when) will ease the difficulty of getting around in public transport in the South Bay, and it’s good to know ZipCar exists.

Silly Q, but how does it does the auto insurance part of it work?
