How I Escaped the Echo Chamber & the Results

It was probably one of the scariest things I had ever done in my blogging lifetime, but it was probably about eight to ten months ago or so that I stopped ‘chiming into the discussion’. One day I woke up and realized that I wasn’t adding much more to the conversation. I could still scan Techmeme and Tailrank to find out what people were talking about, but it was about time that I actually start creating solid content of my own.

My reasons were clear to me:

  1. I could look back and pull more ‘articles’ out to reference what I am working on and really believe in. Not ‘me-toos’ and ‘not-mes’.
  2. By creating my own content, and only adding to other conversations when I really really really have something to add, I make much more intelligent additions to the blogosphere.
  3. Trying to stop talking about what everyone else is talking about is why I really liked blogging in the first place. The echo chamber just recreates old media paradigms: ‘what counts is what everyone else is talking about’
  4. I was getting bored of my own blog.

Of course, though, the downside was pretty scary. ‘Joining the conversation’ was what got me many of my readers in the first place. As Guy pointed out at some point, reading Techmeme, then linking to all of the bloggers who are talking about a subject and adding a bit is good for the stats. It’s definitely a ‘trick’. So is controversy.

However, both are fleeting.

It’s like traditional advertising and PR…sure, it works…while you pay for it. While the pressure is on, you will get results. Spend more, you’ll get more. Usually 1% of 10% of the people who see your ad or read your addition to the techmeme news item will buy. But will they stay? Not if you don’t provide interesting commentary.

What I found is that, although my traffic and Alexa rank all dropped pretty drastically at first, I slowly started climbing again. Technorati is still dropping, but that ‘rank’ is directly related to Echo Chamber Activity (ECA) - links links links. And this time I was actually being read. At one point, I asked my readers to switch their feeds from the Blogger atom feed to my Feedburner feed (as I knew I wanted to make the transition over to Wordpress). Guess how many people responded and changed…40 on Bloglines out of 500 and I didn’t even track any of the other feed reader stats (my rough webstats indicate that I have about 4,000 people on my atom feed versus my Feedburner feed of 1,500). A pretty clear indication of who ACTUALLY reads me versus who just popped me in their feed reader one day and forgot that I was there.
I’m pretty certain that stats mean only about 1/4 of the picture for any blogger, though. The difference, for me, was in how people were responding to my posts in my comments that really convinced me that I was going in the right direction. My average number of comments went from about 2 or 3 to around 10. People were engaged! Interested! Angry! Inspired! They read and they felt and they responded. This was the big pay off for me. My relationships with my little HorsePigCow community were getting deeper and more interesting.

Hell, I could think I was talking to 10,000 people per day and end up talking to 1,500 OR I could know I was just talking to 1,500. It was a pretty enlightening (and empowering) experience.

And…it made it easier for me to ‘let go’ and make the transition over to Wordpress. If people really wanted to continue reading me, they would follow. Stats mean nothing if they don’t account for real people who are truly interested.

…which got me thinking starting to think about stats in general, but that’s another post…

Now the only issue is finding the time to write about the stuff that I’m getting really interested in. Stuff that I’m picking up from discussions offline - one on one discussions with interesting people. Stuff that comes up while facing issues that clients are having. Stuff that many of you are emailing me about and conversations we’re having on IM and email and over the phone. Egad, I have so many anecdotes and a-ha moments and random thoughts (some completely incoherent that I’m sure you could help me with) that I would love to share. And I will…

And fyi…since I stopped worrying, I’ve gone from 3,500 daily page views average to 5,000 daily page views average, met dozens of amazing people. It’s okay to let go…:)

    Congrats. I’ve read a couple other bloggers making similar remarks over the past year, I think Richard MacManus among them. Yep, original content is always better. Writing for Techmeme “Discussion” just isn’t a winning strategy. Of course, some kinds of original content become good Techmeme headlines, and others like yours (which tends toward new marketing and entrepreneurial stuff) usually resonate better in venues other than Techmeme.

    Funny how for some bloggers, Techmeme placement has a negative correlation with quality. Now I hope that’s not true for web product / tech industry issue type bloggers…

    (Yes, I know your post wasn’t actually about Techmeme, but hey, that’s what I do…)

    I don’t get it. Wordpress, statistics and original content is in your entry being mixed up like horses, pigs and cows. Creative, yes, but if the main message is that one wants to create original, even paradigm-shifting content, then I think there is too much salt and pepper in using 40% of the argument in terms of technorati, changing feedburners and such.

    Yet, this is also what happens with my experience around corporate blogging. Too often one talks about the blog (”In our blog we would like to …” etc.) instead of talking through the blog.

    Perhaps one day we will have real artists, Van Goghs, Gaugins, Mozarts and such people blogging: not talking about their works and that they want to be original - but just being original no matter what specialist opinion makers or echoing masses have to say.

    I am not aware of a blog-artists like that yet, but perhaps horsepigcow would have a headstart compared to other bloggers when it comes to reaching that stage.

    That’s great, Tara. I can totally relate… Ever since I started freelancing, I just haven’t had the time to keep up to the 100 blogs I subscribe to. I just keep an eye on a few of my favourites (yourself included, obviously). But I think this has only made me a better blogger.

    Sure, the topics I’m writing about lately may not be part of the “conversation”, but that just means I’m writing about tangible ideas that can stand on their own without requiring people to read all the other blogs on my blogroll.

    This is fine by me - I find the “conversation” is getting a bit boring anyway.

    Important post, Tara. Techmeme *is* largely a game. Anyone can be on Techmeme any day if they just want to find the latest upcoming stories and put a few thoughts together and link to all the others who are discussing it.

    BORING. ECHO CHAMBER. CHEASY.

    I did it for a while too, and it almost killed blogging for me. Now I post about what I want to post about - MUCH more fun.

    And much more interesting to read, I think.
