We rented a hybrid
Thanks Rohan for the tip on Fox Rent a Car! Not fully electric cars (the ones to buy are pretty much 'neighbourhood' cars, which won't help us for our long peninsula stints - too bad there aren't electric recharging stations any longer), but Honda Civic Hybrids...and for less than the average economy model at the other rental agencies. ($21.95/day)
rock on.
rock on.

Gotta say...when you first said you weren't going to buy a car, and were talking about 5-hour back-and-forth commutes to the peninsula, I thought you had lost your mind! But if you're spending most of your time in the city, and just need a car for a day or two a week, this seems like a viable alternative. You should, however, make sure you know when their peak times are so you don't get screwed if you need a car one day and they are sold out. That seems to happen a lot on weekends here in the Bay Area.
yawn on hybrid cars... where do you think electricity comes from???
Just another useless fad. Keep fooling yourselves, people.
anonymous - actions speak louder than words. Get yourself a TerraPass or some Renewable Energy Certificates.
