Meaning...it's a personal thing
Rogue:
1. one who is playful, mischievious; a scamp
2. character in the XMen...who never quite fit in
3. operating outside normal or desirable controls
...and then it means some not so cool stuff. Fuck it. I align to what is above. Rogue was defined in 1999...I haven't really looked back...
Pinko:
1. a person who holds moderately leftist political views; a pink.
2. emotionally charged terms used to refer to revolutionaries
3. a sympathizer of the 'commons'
4. a term used to berate those who wouldn't give up their friends in an inquistion to squeeze out people of a particular political leaning. To this day, nobody can tell us why.
....and yadda yadda yadda....same thing. You know what I mean.
Citizen:
1. a civilian
2. a resident of a particular place
3. a rank-less descriptor of a person
4. you and me...more or less...
...seems innocuous to me...some sort of 'citizen journalist' 'citizen kane' 'citizen watch' thing...although the watch thing I don't necessarily get (they look the same as any watch to me...but citizen doesn't mean unremarkable in my definition).
So, Jeneane is right. I tend to brand stuff...give provocative names to what I'm doing and participating in...I don't know why. I say branding is dead, yet I have to give a catchy name to every move I make. I suppose I need a point of departure. Maybe that's why I never pick a very comfortable term. I don't know. Really, I seriously, completely think I'm being moderate when I choose. That's the funny part. ;)
But it is always personal. It always connects to me and what my beliefs are first. I believe in all of this. I am passionate about it.
Everyone has an opinion. We've been discussing this a bit on the Pinko mailing list...the idea of customer feedback and what you should listen to. It isn't all about consensus. That waters things down. You can't please everyone all of the time.

"Rogue" is also the name of one of the most innovative computer games of all time. I know that's not your point, but it's the first thing I think of when I hear the word.
Also Tara, not bound by conventional wisdom and group think.
Naming and Branding, while strongly interrelated, are not the same thing.
Imbuing a name with meaning (branding?) can be forced or can happen holistacally, or both.
I say - name away! Names make it easier to talk about what you are doing. Besides, you come up with some cool names!
Way to go, Tara! You & Chris are inspirational as far as stepping out into the cruel world on your own. I enjoy reading your site and his. Great personal touches to both. I like the new header too...
There's a lot of history and politics behind the word citizen.
@AP
I know. I also know that every bloody word that means anything has some history...good or bad. That's the thing about history. History includes people who use language.
My *point* of this stifled rant is that I don't give a shit about semantics anymore. I give a shit about what I'm doing and what I mean when I say Rogue, Pinko, Citizen, Bar (as in Camp), etc. etc.
Too many people spend too much time caring about semantics when they should care more about actions.
Good idea! I need to start branding myself more... I'm the "BRANDER!"
:)
Works for me!
