Announcement #2 - Rogue on the loose

So, yes, the rumors are true. As of today, I am no longer with Riya as a full-time employee. However, it wasn't an easy decision for either myself or Riya to make.
So why am I leaving?
- My personal brand is growing in leaps and bounds and I owe it to myself to pursue Pinko Marketing as a greater entity. I simply cannot do this while at Riya. It wouldn't be fair to them and...although the idea was born there, it's never been fully embraced by them. Watch for meetups, seminars, camps, publications and other events near you!
- Although Riya recognizes the importance of community-focused marketing and how far they've come because of it, they are planning to hire some MarCom people to champion a more traditional and mass appeal strategy. Or something like that (I don't know the person they are going to hire, so I can't assume anything). Both Riya and I agreed that there would be too much tension when this happens. If I'm already a pain in the ass, I'll be even moreso then. I want us all to stay friends. ;)
- I just have too many opportunities to not pursue them. New challenges and experiences and vibrant communities await me and I can't let this time pass by. Who knows when the bubble will burst! Must...take...advantage... In other words, the time is ripe for this radical. I mean, when will the stars ever align so perfectly again?
- Riya's community is so awesome and strong and the members of the Riya community run that program themselves. Frankly, y'all have made the past couple of months too easy for me - you're hired!
- I want to spend more time working on the non-profit, goody-two-shoes projects that I've already been working on in my 'spare' time. It's time to take these a little further into the world and open my life to broader experience. Even just the little bit I learnt while in Bangalore has blown my mind open. I can imagine a videoblogged travelog of these adventures would do wonders for blowing everyone else's minds, too.
The only issue I'm facing is that I'm a Canadian citizen on a TN-1 Visa. I'll have to speak with someone on my options. [please don't kick me out of the country! I promise to pay taxes, etc.] I'm pretty certain I have 30 days leeway to figure out what I'm going to do.
So...what next?
I don't know. I'm really very excited about what's in store me and don't want to make any irrational decisions. I know I want to go forward fearless and choose the best path. Thus, I will be spending the next few weeks, chilling out, assessing the situation, talking to everyone I know and taking as much advice as possible. [besides, it's a busy month with Mashpit, Barcamp, Vloggercon, Super Nova (where I'm moderating the marketing workshop), etc. coming up]
I will continue to advise Riya one day a week (Munjal wants to make certain the community continues to reign prominent). I also thank Munjal from the bottom of my heart for recognizing my Rogue ideas as being important to building his business and bringing me down to the Valley.

Wow!
Best of luck with the decision (and with the move with Chris) - exciting times.
If I can help at all (or you decide to include Ireland on the world tour!), don't hesitate. In fact, don't hesitate anyway!
Hugs,
Tom
Exciting Times, indeed. Your enthusiasm for community is abundantly clear. I'm sure that the Riya community will remain in your heart - and probably your activity - for some time.
Be contagious - Mike
"Tara Hunt, one of the keynotes at mesh, announced that she is leaving Riya, her employer, to do her own think to grow her Pinko Marketing brand.
While I certainly wish her well and think she's tremendous, I have to wonder about the wisdom in leaving a..."
Whoa! This is BIG!
Good luck on blazing your new path. I was waiting to hear your web 2.0 evangelist strategy continued on your blog but now....Aww, man...
Anyways, I'm sure you'll path-blaze (i dunno if that's a real word, but whatever).
Stay true to yourself. Way to go. Mario
Best of luck, Tara. I'm sure Pinko will carry you far -- or you'll carry it.
congrats! You'll do great! i know that quitting munjal was one of the best decisions i have made. It will be one of yours, too. I'm confident.
Oh ! This was a surprise.. Anway all the best for your future endeavors :)
but unlike andale, riya looks like a win down the road. i hope you were able vest a bit before leaving. good luck on your future endevours.
Tara:
Best of luck. I am in a similar position of knowing it's time to move on because the money/opportunity isn't here.
My problem is I don't know what I want to do. I'm not established like you...so hopefully I can end up with something I love like you have.
Good luck!
best of luck...can't wait to see what you pull out of the bag next
Congrats Tara...
Wow. It's a bummer that things didn't last longer, but it seems like you both got a lot out of your employment while it lasted. Good luck in the scary world of irregular paychecks!
Congratulations!
The right choice at the right time. While I'm sure Riya will be less pinko without you, you are obviously ready for new and more self-directed challenges.
Whoo HOOO!
congrats, tara.
tara,
good luck on the new gig - whatever it turns out to be.
cheers, mark
Congrats are in order Tara, you've really earned your reputation as a successful startup launcher.
Tara,
Congratulations and good luck with all of the challenges you are heading into with work, life and love, etc. It is very exciting and frightening, but I am sure you already recognize and embrace that... or you wouldn't be doing it.
Good luck with the whole US Gub-ment stuff. I'd offer my help, but as a former Communist... I'd prolly get you kicked out of the dang country!
Best of luck to you- I will be reading anxiously.
Tara,
You are talented and smart and helping guide the way to a much-needed revolution in how authentic people get cool ideas out to other authentic people in a respectful way ... giving them an opportunity to participate in the idea.
I wish you the best of success in everything, and if there's anything I can do to help, please feel free to ask!
Tara, best of luck. Even from my vantage point as a very distant observer it seems like the right time.
You've become one of those well-connected people for whom opportunities can pop up anywhere. (Example of well-connectedness: I've known Lex for a long time, and Cheapeats Toronto major contributor YD aka YJ is my wife, but neither Lex nor I had any idea that the other had a blog until you mentioned me in your blog and Lex saw that!)
Pinko Marketing has been quite an inspiration to me and I'm happy that you now have more time to devote to it and related things. So thanks in advance!
Rohan
I know you'll be just fine. Hopefully there will be an announcement of your next big thing real soon.
i think yer PiC should "MARRY" U!!
;))
Rock On! Tara!! & Go Oilers!!
Cheers! Billy ;))
I'll second congratulations; but there are plenty of those. I have a point to make..
Why is it implicit in your statements that you can't do what you do, in Canada? From what little I've heard and seen so far, Toronto and Vancouver at the least are good candidates for locations; travel to the US or worldwide for conferences etc. isn't terrible... Seems to me that worrying about the visa status isn't really necessary.
Why can't I work from Canada:
1. It would cost me a gabillion dollars to relocate right now.
2. I love living here.
3. I've fallen in love with an American who lives here...with me now...and distance isn't easy on a relationship
4. Canada has already charged me the 'exit tax' (I just paid the $5000)
5. Whatever people think, globalization is still not quite there
I'm staying. I love it here. The VISA is pretty simple, really.
Congrats on the move. With everything you're involved in, I have no doubt you'll have many opportunities and enjoy the freelance life.
Tara, you rock the Casbah. It takes guts to recognize your moment to move and to act on it, no matter how hard and scary it may be. You inspire me. You've become one of the handful of must-reads in my feed list, and that's because you're authentic, smart, and passionate. If you can't land on your feet, God help the rest of us.
You are among friends. Don't ever forget that.
On a quick note about your TN visa - figure out a way to stay employed with Riya so that your visa doesn't expire. You want very very much to be able to say to an INS officer that you have not been in between jobs for more than 4 weeks or so.
I had an experience with INS where I was on TN Visa, 6 weeks between jobs and they were kinda unhappy with me. This was before 9/11 and I can only imagine it's much worse now.
Good luck with all the crazy changes in your life!
Tara, I've said it before - you are a force of nature. You will land on your feet and be better for it. I'll be eagerly following along with all your new adventures.
Woooooow! Take Pinko worldwide Tara...it's the future (although English comedian Peter Kay still thinks it is Garlic Bread - Google it for more info!!).
Even if the future of Pinko isn't always online, the Pinko way is a mentality that few understand and even fewer have the guts to implement - so get out there and spread the word.
You have already done masses to promote this type of (un)marketing and every cult needs an iconic figurehead (!!) so step up to the plate!
You should have enough confidence in what you have achieved (and heard so far) to know that all Pinko needs is a solid foundation on which it is based in order for people to digest it at their leisure and adopt it.
That said, true Pinko-ism wouldn't really have a manual would it, but in order to convert the non-believers, maybe it is worthwhile putting into print the Pinko Manifesto?
Good luck with everything and I hope that your travels bring you to the North of England in the future - you and Chris are more than welcome to stay!!!)
Hey Tara,
You know we'd welcome you and your PiC home with open arms if you ever did chose to do so but I completely understand the opportunities that await you.
It takes balls the size of a Moose to break out on your own especially if that means leaving a pre-IPO/Google/Yahoo/News Corp. buy-out company.
Can't wait to see what you do next!...now, where's my Pink t-shirt?
Tara,
Best of luck with your endevors. You've deffinately created you're on brand really well.
Paul
Tara,
Best of luck. Please stay in touch.
You go girl!
It's fun on the consulting side of the fence. Lots of flexiblity, lots of variety, lots of fun.
After working at a couple of semi-successful start-ups its been a nice change for the past couple of years.
Sometimes I long to be a part of the bigger team and for something to sink my teeth into.
I suppose you have your PiC for that!
wow, Tara - I've had my head in other places, so busy I've not had a chance to sift through my RSS reader, so I missed this!
Sounds like a smart move, and am sure you will go great guns.
Wishing you the best of luck and lots of success!!!
Alex.
