Joshua Radin and my brush with loosened principles

Joshua Radin

"Somehow, I'm leading someone else's life. I cut a star down with my knife...
And right now, I still see the way the moon plays this tune..."

I haven't been this excited about a musician in a long time. I have eclectic music tastes. I love Jazz, Blues, R&B, Old Skool and Folk. I've been through my hard rock years, moshed to the alternative scene. I went through a hip-hop phase. I even have a guilty addiction to certain pop princess songs.

But right now Joshua Radin is killing me. Killing me. Maybe it's me feeling earthy and mellow lately, but something about his stuff makes me feel like I'm in the beginning of a movie, traveling down a road, hopeful and pensive. It's my current soundtrack.

I don't generally listen to radio stations and I haven't been creative enough with Pandora or taken enough time with Last.fm lately to discover new stuff. And Magnatune has a pretty dismal selection of folk music (which surprises me). I hate to admit it, but I found him in the iTunes music store. I needed some new music and I remembered someone telling me to look up Damien Rice.

He was okay.

But the 'music others bought' led me to Joshua. The first sample I listened to led me to download his entire album. Right there. With a click. One click.

Dammit. It's so easy. Why?! Why!?

Apple, why can't you tell the RIAA to take a flying leap? People will share files no matter what. See, I buy...see? You make it so simple. $0.99...bah. Simple. $9.99 for an entire album? Nuttin. Please...you are the one to do this. You can stop the madness. You have the power.

And thank you, Apple...for my beautiful iPod mini and the simpler than heck iTunes interface, but you don't have to lock me in. I'll stay as long as you continue to treat me right. Even cushy prisons are prisons.

Oh...and two highly recommended Joshua songs:

Only You
Someone Else's Life

He reminds me of Simon and Garfunkel, thoughtful, powerful lyrics. I can see why connects.

I love your uninhibited excitment about his music. We need to let poetry and songs and words get to us - lay down our cool and pick up passions again.

Have you picked up Bruce Springsteen's We Shall Overcome yet? If you like folk/hillbilly/roots music, you'll love this album.

I just picked it up on the advice of my father-in-law, and it's really, really, really good:
More about it on my blog ...

I have to say..."Winter" is one of my favorite Joshua Radin songs. I'm not sure if it's on the album you purchased, but you might want to return to iTunes and check it out. :)
