Conventional Wisdom has never been a compliment

Personally, I'm all for unpopular opinion.
I said the other night that I want to always be on the fringe...and I think I will...and it may sound very un-pinko to some, but I write for me, not for anyone else or stats. ;)
Personally, I think everyone should re-think how we 'rate' stuff. It isn't about popularity.

Amen. It would be nice to put an end to the poularity contests. I call this
death of the alpha blogger
It's nice to have readers, but if I were to find out that not one person on the planet actually read my blog, I'd still write. I call it a type of 'public self-therapy'. Or self-promotion, whatever floats yer boat.
I have been ranting on this for a while. I don't give a hoot about what is popular on Digg, I want human filters that attract things that I find of interest.
The broadline popularity is overrated. We need to better aggregate on people who are near in thought. Everybody believes they are on the edge to some degree, but who do we better bring together the "edge cases"?
I am playing with some things along these lines. I hear this as a big need from the 95% of the people on the web that are not early adopters. The soccer moms, the knitters, the model railroader, the stay-at-home dog breeder, etc. But the tools are focussing on geek audience. Others deeply want these tools, but they want the tools tuned to their interest not the interest of the mob.
