Stop the insanity Mark, listen to danah

danah, scared

Egad, this is madness. And the comments are worse.

Stop the insanity! danah is right...the furor over MySpace is totally driven by parents' inability to trust and let go.

I left a comment, myself...I don't know if Cuban takes the time to read and follow-through on his comments, but hopefully he'll stumble upon danah's wisdom somehow, someday. That paranoia must end.

I have a 13 year old and I know from him that there are very few sacred spaces that kids can control and create themselves anymore. Let's not screw this up for them, too.

Looks like your comment drew a response from another paranoid commenter.

I'm with you on personal freedom and responsibility. We let our children use the computer unsupervised, but we've told them about some of the dangers and they know what information they shouldn't share (address, phone number, etc.)

My daughter is 19. We've let her loose on the Internet since she was 12. Amazingly enough we actually communicate with her on a daily basis and are confident that she has learned to use caution relative to the Internet. She has managed to find old friends via MySpace and thinks that the paranoia of parents stems from parents who aren't involved with their children.

I watched Danah Boyd on Fox News and left rather unimpressed. Bill threw a couple of softballs and Danah caught them. Let's try and remember here that Fox news is News Corp. much like MySpace is News Corp. Let's also remeber, as Olbermann so nicely puts it, it is FOX not FACTS.

What is troubling to me is not that kids are online. The concept of "social networking" rocks. What I don't like is that these 'sandboxes' for children to play in online, are not there because Rupert wants to be a nice guy and give your 13 year old a place to go. Your 13 year old is just another cog in the lead gen/CRM machine. Your 13 year old is the next mortgage, car sale, and life insurance target. (See booths at AdTech)

Your son or daughter doesn't own their 'space' on MySpace, it is being bought and sold in one form or another as we speak.
