Net Squared Tuesday Presentation

Eddie Codel caught up with me right before my presentation at Net Squared Tuesday and shot this little ditty where I explain the basis behind Pinko Marketing.

I have also posted the PDF version of the presentation, which may or may not make sense without the sound (I tend to use slides to 'punch up' my presentations rather than give them).

Some serious props have to go out to the photographers of the booootiful photos I snagged for the presentation. Remember me going through the pink tag on Flickr? Well, that's where most of them came from: Xray Glasses, Lichenstein Girl, Pigs Fly, Hairdye Overload, Retro Wrench, Candy Shack Eye Feast, Love in Pavement, M&M Love (removed to respect the wishes of the photographer. Sorry Robyn), Pencil Crayons...and you should really check out my faves from that exploration. Yum. [Sorry if I misread any CC attributes. Email me if you need me to replace the shots.]

Oh...and the link for the cool bowiechick YouTube video is uber important...as is the CNet article that describes what went down. ;)

PLease remove my link from your
infomercial video
while i review my options and obtain advice.
I do not support your business and do not want to be associated with it nor advertise it with my art, which you used without obtaining permission.

I am the owner of the Valentine's M&Ms photo which you also obtained and used without my permission. It is located on Flickr with the tag "© All rights reserved". Stock-art sites such as istockphoto.com exist for this very reason - when using stock photographs, you already have the artist's permission. Now you've had at least two people discover their works' use in your presentation and do not want it included. It would have been nice, courteous, and ethical to obtain this permission in advance. I most likely would have been happy to let you use it. But it would have been nice to have had the choice. Since I did not, please remove my work from your video / presentation as well.

@attaboy (also commented on your blog): Well, although I understand your rage, I think it may be misdirected.

This video happened to be shot by Eddie Codel, who volunteers at Net Squared, a project branch of the not-for-profit agency Compumentor, who spends time trying to help other non-profits get up to speed with technology and business. I happened to be there at Varnish, volunteering my time to speak about marketing.

Eddie loves your art and wanted to shoot it there. He edited the video and it resides at Net Squared's blog.

I'm not a capitalist...quite the opposite. I've been raked over the coals for my 'socialist' ways (I'm a proud Canadian). I know it sounds trite, but I'm trying to change marketing from within. But I spend more of my time actually fighting against consumerism and fighting for individual empowerment, whether through spreading open source or creating spaces for independents to speak out and gather.

I know I speak from a point of privilege. I know I come from a middle-classed white bread background and that marketing is 99% of the time, actually making the world a worse place (and advertising is part of marketing...so is sales...btw. Marketing is the process of taking a product or service to a market, including closing the feedback loop into product/service improvements). I refuse to feel guilty about that, but I certainly did not intend to steal your soul or any of the like.

You display your artwork in a very public place. I'm certain there will be more appearances of your work in other pieces. Two other videos were shot in front of it that night (of the two other speakers). None of these videos intended to make money or to exploit your art in any way. I can ask Eddie to re-edit the video and remove the reference to your art. I doubt if he can edit out the background.

Anyway...I'm sorry you are angry. I don't know if you would be so angry if you actually met me in person. That's the beauty of this online thing. Feel free to drop me hate mail if you would like. It is horsepigcow at gmail dot com.

@robyn:

Sorry. I will remove that shot. I misread the CC licensing.
