I don't get it

I mean...maybe I'm missing something here, but why would anyone find this useful?

Um, here are some Pinko tips for blogging (I may regret this...doling out advice is a risky business and I really have no right):
  1. Write about stuff you care about (unless someone else...not just A-listers...is talking about stuff you care about, then talk about it, too and link to them - best done doing a search on topics you are interested in on Technorati etc. and reading all sorts of blogs that are talking about it).

  2. Don't blog for attention, blog for passion. Your passion. Get it off your chest. I wouldn't blog for the shock factor, though. It only lasts for a while, then implodes. Even Ben Barren is getting soft as he climbs the ranks. The naked chicks aren't nearly as naked anymore. ;)

  3. Write like you have an audience of 2 ... pick the two. I picked my mom and Chris. Anyone else who enjoys it is a bonus.

  4. Read lots of stuff and comment everywhere you have something to say. Yes, you can leave your blog URL, but that's not the point. Interaction is good. I also like Elisa's rule that if a comment goes beyond 2 paragraphs, then it becomes a blog post.

  5. Only ocassionally write in numbered lists. (Carol...yours is an exception) There is rarely a narrative or a story in numbered lists. Only 'instruction'. Maybe it's just my preference, but I really like human blogs.
Yeah...link alot. For sure. But that stuff about your blog being a product and stuff. Man...maybe Guy and I are just from two entirely different worlds. I don't get it. (on the other hand, this post was great...some numbered lists are fine)

You're right of course except when you're doing seriously heavy duty business blog type stuff then the audience finds numbered (or at the very least bulletted) lists valuable as visual aids.

Tara, you got it!

Think you nailed the difference between "pull" (your recipe) and the leftovers of the old days of "push" tweaked for the blog ;)

I liked Guy's advice, and like seeing your take on things, too. Seeing both sides of the story is more helpful than one. His steps obviously work when you look at how his blog sky-rocketed when it was launched. Like you, I'm not sure I like the email spamming about my blog - traditional marketing and Guy's own reference to our inbuilt bull filters make me wonder how much of that works when you're not Guy Kawasaki.

Anyway, better go. Got to email everyone in my address book. ;-)

two off-shoots, growing like weeds..

1. rewrite the blog, it's a seed

2. if it's right for change, everyone will forward it to their email list

HorsePigCow Technorati Rank: 1,722 (1,779 links from 638 sites)
(built over a couple of years)

Guy Kawasaki Technorati Rank: 59 (7,939 links from 3,525 sites)
(built in a few months)

Who knows how to evangelize?...or give advice?

@anonymous...

I had a feeling I'd get one of you.

Here is a list for you:

1. I don't care about ranking
2. I don't have an Apple-made-famous-published-a-book background like Kawasaki
3. I didn't say I was qualified to give out advice
4. A rank of 1,722 is not so bad, if you ask me as a woman who talks about life, love and marketing who is quite new to the valley. Man, I'm surprised people read me at all.
5. I don't care about ranking

Anonymous, it isn't about that and my post is how it isn't about that.

Go ahead, use Guy's advice, but unless you are Guy or someone equally high profile to start with, you are not going to hit 59 anytime soon. That will be frustrating. I would write what you are passionate about. But then again, I'm me.
