Speaking in Toronto: May 8/9
Yep. I'll be visiting my old stomping grounds in early May to be a keynote for a yet-to-be-named, but enthusiastically recieved Web 2.0 conference, put on by Mark Evans, Michael McDerment, Matthew Ingram, Rob Hyndman and Stuart MacDonald.
My talk? I'm speaking about the new marketing [marketing 2.0...lolz] - using social 'Web 2.0' software to reach the community. Kinda like my Marketing in the Post-Cluetrain Era post, but better and I'm going to make it interactive, practical and fun. I'm going to cover tagging, folksonomies, blogging, etc. and also very seriously stress the importance of permission. Yep. No spamming allowed. People's attention is precious. Let's not waste it.
The best part of this is that the organizers themselves represent a wide range of backgrounds, some of whom I read religiously when I lived in Canada (at the National Post and the Globe and Mail). AND they announced their intentions at the latest installation of Barcamp in Toronto, DemoCamp.
I'll be bringing my PiC with me (also known as the 'patron saint of barcamp' lol), so we'll be wanting to get together with local TO geeks to:
- have a Toronto barcamp...this one not purely about demos, but more about all of the facets of the net. We want to meet marketing people, developers, bloggers, PR people, hackers, p2p music/file sharers, entrepreneurs, mySpace addicts, whoever! Lots of discussions, brainstorming, maybe some mashing up (Mashpit anyone?) and definitely plotting...;)
- have a great round of Kickass Karaoke. Hopefully Carson will be kind enough to host a special geekaoke night. Joey? Wanna ping him for me?
I also want to chillax at the Drake Hotel one night, visit my old pals at the Bovine Sex Club (not what you think) another night and hang out with my bestest friend, Carol muchos.
Om Malik and Mike Arrington are also rumored to be asked as speakers at the conference. Nice. Maybe we can transplant SF to TO for the weekend? What a mashup that would be!

As a native of Buffalo, Toronto is my New York City. (Does that make sense?) In any case, say hi to the Eaton Center, Yonge Street, and the Subway for me! And post ur preso when it's all "polished" and "done."
