Bill Monk: the new millenium relationship saver
Conversation from past relationships:
ME: Erm...I'll get this, then [thinking: damn, didn't I get the last one?]HIM: Well, yeah, I've got the last three dinners.
ME: Yeah, sure sure. [thinking: cheapskate]
HIM: I get dinner all of the time.
ME: What do you mean you get it all of the time?! I got it the last time!
HIM: You want me to pay? Fine, miss I-Can-Do-It-Myself. I'll remember this.
ME: Eff you, I'll pay. [thinking: it is soooo over]
...
and this continues badly throughout the relationship until both resents the other for being the one who pays all of the time.
...
Alas, modern relationships. It's become more complicated than ever. How does one keep track when you are both breadwinners?
Sure, Chris may be all about the mashup thing (erm, k...that's hot...hint: not so much), but I'm all about the way this can aid our money woes going forward. For instance, tonight, we dined at a Thai restaurant with some friends and Chris threw back my $30 contribution, saying, "I'll get this one." Meanwhile, I paid for movies and brunch this weekend. He can enter that he owes $30 for movies, brunch and groceries and I can enter $30 for the dinner he covered with Bill Monk, then the Bill Monk says, "K, you are totally even." (although we set up our accounts today, so, technically, I'm behind $30)
After a couple of nights out like this, there will be no question. Bill Monk will tell us, "Chris owes Tara $xx" or vice versa and we will know whose 'turn' it is. As the years go by, there will be no fights about money because we will be able to see who exactly is contributing what. No fights. No misunderstandings. No messy forgetfulness.
The perfect modern relationship saver. Thanks Bill Monk!

A friend of mine uses a spreedsheet to record the "financials" of a relationship. Started doing that after one where she (even though a student and he wasn't) ended up paying the most.
Your other option is to turn European. You'd never have to deal with these little squibbles again.
Kind of nice idea, but I can't imagine anyone who would be so tight as to want to keep Bill Monk up to date - and if I did know someone like that, I probably wouldn't remain friends with them for long.
