Net Tuesday: Remixing the Web for Social Change

Flickr Photo

So, there is this really big world out there and it's filled with these, erm, let's call them 'users'. And these 'users', they have various levels of technical savvy. They also have various needs, like needs to connect, needs to find stuff, needs to organize their lives, needs to communicate...

And then there is this world we like to call, uh... 'Web 2.0' (or something like that). This world is filled with all sorts of people building all sorts of fabulous tools. These tools help us connect, help us organize, help us find, help us communicate...

So we have a. users with needs and b. builders with tools.

Excellent.

But there is a problem here...there is a sometimes HUGE gulf separating these two worlds.

Ever tried to explain tagging to your great aunt? Ever tried to teach a corporate litigation lawyer how to use Del.icio.us?

Okay, so they can learn in their own time. Paw. Who cares about them?

What about people for whom these tools would make a world of difference to the difference they are making in the world?

This is what the good people at Net Squared, TechSoup, Compumentor and (coming soon) CivicForge are up to these days: helping the non-profit organizations learn how to use these tools (free, open source, social networks, etc.) to make a difference.

And they are looking for volunteers. Go to the Net2 blog to find out more information. They have a hot new website coming soon, too...so stay tuned. Sounds like there will be more Net Tuesdays coming up, so keep a look-out on upcoming.org.

I'm in...you?

I'm in - with spades!!! These people get what all of this (tech, 2.0-or-whatever-it's-up-to) is all about. I hope the Brainjammers get hooked up with these folks...
