Context is Everything
Gee...that sounds familiar...
But seriously, when it comes to semantics, we can get pretty muddled up in meaning. If you lose the context surrounding something (a word, a symbol an icon), you lose the meaning altogether. Semantics are powerful connectors and detractors. What joins two people together, keeps another person out. Social networks built on semantic systems give their members a sense of belonging...a feeling of 'coming home'. And, I believe, that trying to scale semantic meaning muddies and destroys everything that is beautiful about social networks.
Okay, if you're thinking, "What the hell is she talking about?" I say...exactly.
