My Dead Cat Looks Like Camilla Parker Bowles

Flickr Photo

How very interesting. Having finally gotten around to reading the buzz in the blogosphere about Riya, I kept coming across a reccurring commenter (hello Vikram) who appears to be working for another company using face recognition in an interesting way: My Heritage. (you know, Vikram, it's rude not to disclose in the blogosphere...especially when it is obvious)

Although they are approaching face recognition in an entirely different way (we are a photosearch site, not a photosharing/storage, etc. site), their face recognition seems to be pretty interesting.

Currently, they have a beta set up so that you can upload one photo and compare the faces in the photo to celebrities! How much fun is that? (although I don't think I look anything like Hilary Swank)

And...they have something that we haven't worked on yet: Pet Recognition! Yes, MyHeritage tells me that my late cat, Ringo, looks like Camilla Parker-Bowles, and bygosh, I think they are right! I see the distinct resemblance.

Hey Tara,

Love your sense of humor!

Thanks for stopping by and visiting our demo at MyHeritage.com. Actually almost everyone wants to see which celeb they look like, especially when the results are so good, usually, thanks to the technology we've assembled behind this. Seems like you're the only one so far who uploaded a photo of a dead pet. BTW, you may have missed something in the demo, it gives you the top 10 closest-looking celebs for every face, not just one match; use the arrows to cycle to the other matches. One of the top matches shows that you resemble the lovely Scarlett Johansson. Look here to see the striking resemblance, not to mention the ravishing hairstyle! IMHO this is great fun but I'll let the readers decide, or try it for themselves.

Speaking of your ex-pet-cat Ringo, recognizing animal faces is not something we're focused on (just a bonus provided by the technology). For example, in this amusing photo, we miss all the chimps but do a perfect job of detecting and recognizing the various faces of the celebrity involved (no offence meant).

Seriously, though our service supports uploading and hosting photos, it is done with a special focus on genealogy and family history. Face recognition is just one of the cool things we do in this area, it is not the only thing. I won't go into more detail here, you're warmly invited to visit us again soon following our full launch.

Good luck with the Riya alpha launch. Would love to get an invite. Cheers.
