One Web Day

David Weinberger refers to Susan Crawford's idea for One Web Day:

Her idea: A year from today, we have an Earth Day for the Internet. No particular political agenda. Big tent. "A first step towards recognizing the fragility of this resource." She says, "The key pain humans feel is alienation." She wants One Web Day to help counter this with connection.

I like this idea. One year from today, I gather, each of us will be involved in something impactful at some level - online or offline - that will acknowledge, celebrate and preserve this new, amazing medium that has changed the world.

I'm reminded of one of my favourite quotes ever by David:

We're writing ourselves into existence on the web one blog entry at a time.

I'd add to that Wiki's, Tagging/Folksonomies, OpenSource, Photo & Music Sharing, Social Networks and spaces like 43things.com/43places.com (who I don't know how to 'define). I believe there will be many more mediums springing up on the web that do this.

And...what do you think? Do you think that the technology will finally get us closer to environmental responsibility someday? Already, I'm seeing alternatives to paper documents everywhere. So, celebrating One Web Day is tied to Earth Day as well.
