Google is going for it. I'm all for it.

Why?

Look at the Cluetrain. It's always been available for free online. Still, people bought enough of them to make it a best seller. You can't put online text on your shelves or write in the margins...etc. etc.

And, it will make all literature accessible to those who can get online (which I think should be a right and not a privilege).

And then there is that crazy Godin guy giving away his labour. I hardly think that he's starving.

When books go online, they may find new audiences, wider audiences or find out they have no audience at all. Remarkable books will increase sales. Unremarkable books will decrease sales. It's a try before you buy system.
