Kickass Karaoke

It was probably the last night of the 'Toronto in a Whirlwind' tour for Janette and Matt last night. The leave tomorrow eve, but most likely want to relax tonight and enjoy a romantic evening out. Thus, I had to end their tour with a bang and take them to Kickass Karaoke, hosted by Carson T. Foster (Toronto's Iggy Pop look-a-like and KJ extraordinaire).

There is something about KAK (the fabulous acronym for the night, I refer to myself as a KAKer) that is unlike a karaoke night anywhere else. It's probably a combination of the people that go (fellow KAKers), the uber cool host (Carson), the venues he picks (born at The Bovine Sex Club, now at the Rivoli, etc.), the music catalogue (download the pdf here) and the overall 'brand' (I know, I hate that word) of the event - being 'Kickass', having the ultra-alternative posters, etc. When you walk into a KAK event, even the most anti-karaoke have fun.

Instead of being one of those nights where people just pick songs they like and get up and either butcher them or do a decent job, KAK is about song selection for the people and HOW you perform it. My standard is Mr. Roboto (The Styx). It's a no-brainer. People dig the song and doing the robot makes for an easy transition through the bridge. There are KAKers who have spent alot of time refining their song selection delivery. They'll produce rhyme, dance moves, props & costumes, work with Accordian Guy or otherwise entertain through the bridges. KAK virgins learn very quickly that, unless you have one of those voices that will make people weep with joy, you have to show some real enthusiasm (and a few crazy moves) up there to get the crowd going (and, boy, they go! Dancing on bars, jumping on stage, etc.).

Anyway, it's loads of fun and happens every second week at the Rivoli. It's a total hoot.

So, I'm not the only crazy chick (and marketing geek to boot) who blogs about Kickass Karaoke!
