Buy This

Lately, I've been disheartened by consumerism.

Having an 11 year-old child in downtown Toronto, I am constantly pressured to outspend the parents of his friends. My neighbourhood is currently a fantastic mix of the haves, the have-nots and the have-somes (I fit into the latter). No matter who we are, we stretch our credit limits to the max to get our kids the latest gadget or the coolest running shoes. Anything less is child abuse...or so we're led tobelieve.

I also watch my single girlfriends who make less money than me, get sucked into makeup counters that sell them $270 two oz. creams because they are in their mid-30's and anything less will leave them looking like...well...women in their mid-30's. They buy these up and stay in for the rest of the month with their creams because they can't afford a night on the town or to go to that art show or even to go to the cheap movies.

Ech...and I'm not immune. I blew my budget in NYC at the end of last month because I HAD to get a facial at the world-renowned Bliss Spa ($150), then HAD to buy all of the product that the esthetician recommended (another$150), then HAD to buy a pair of shoes I couldn't quite fit into ($200) because I could go back to Toronto and other women could ask me where I got those fabulous shoes and I would throw back my hair and say nonchalantly, "I bought these in SOHO, New York".

Ech ech ech. So I spent February miserable (albeit sans blackheads) and sitting at home with those shoes because I spent my entire food & entertainment budget for a month in 1/2 a day.

It gets too easyto get caught up in ground-swell. It's the "new marketing". When the useless Paris Hilton is mixing her vintage with her designer pieces, everyone invades vintage stores, although they used to be the 'best kept secrets' for women of lower and middle income to buy a nice piece without blowing our budget. Now they charge $500 for a dress that smells like mothballs.
